- Early – William Baldwin writes Beware the Cat (first published 1561), an early example of extended fiction (and specifically of horror fiction) in English and including an account of a printing house with which the author is familiar.[1]
- Publication in London of The xiii Bukes of Eneados of the famose Poete Virgill, the first published complete translation of any major work of classical antiquity into one of the English languages, based posthumously on Gavin Douglas's Eneados, a translation of Virgil's Aeneid from Latin into Middle Scots completed in 1513.
- Completion of construction of the Biblioteca Marciana in Venice to the design of Jacopo Sansovino.
- Approximate date – Ralph Roister Doister, the first known comedy in the English, is written by London schoolmaster Nicholas Udall for his pupils to perform. Gammer Gurton's Needle by "Mr. S." follows.
