|
The 1950 NCAA Men's Division I Ice Hockey Tournament involved 4 schools playing in single-elimination play to determine the national champion of men's NCAA Division I college ice hockey. It began on March 16, 1950, and ended with the championship game on March 18. A total of 4 games were played, all at Broadmoor Arena in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Colorado College, coached by Cheddy Thompson, won the national title with a 13-4 victory in the final game over Boston University, coached by Harry Cleverly. The 23 goals scored by CC in the Frozen Four is the highest number ever posted for the championship rounds. Additionally the goal differential (16) is the greatest total ever reached.
Ralph Bevins, goaltender for Boston University, was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.
Format
The two teams judged to be the best from each region (East and West) were invited to the tournament as participants in the single-elimination tournament. They were seeded to allow intra-regional play in the semifinal (the #1 team from the East plays the #2 team from the West and vice versa). In the semifinal round the two winning teams advanced to the National Championship game while the losers proceeded to a consolation game.
