1953 Bay of Plenty earthquake
The 1953 Bay of Plenty earthquake struck the upper North Island on September 29 at 1:36 pm. With a depth of 273 km, it is one of the deepest major earthquakes recorded in New Zealand.[1] Shaking was felt as far south as northern Otago. Recorded intensities from the tremor reached VII (Strong) in eastern Bay of Plenty and northern Hawke's Bay.
