1954 Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race

The 1954 Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race was won on handicap by Solveig, making her the overall winner in 1954. She had obtained line honours in 1953. The 36-foot double ender that was built in 1950 in Sydney by the Norwegian boatyard, Halvorsen & Sons, was fabricated of Huon Pine, a rare wood, the second-oldest organism known to mankind, and found only in the rain-forests of Tasmania. Solveig is still a sound vessel, lying off Honolulu, Hawaii, U.S.A.
