The Gamecocks' 1979 season, the program's second ever, would be considered a success by most pundits. USC finished with their second consecutive winning record at 14-5, and made it to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history. They would go on to lose to fierce rivals Clemson in the first round of the tournament.
This season was also the last at Carolina for seniors such as Brian Winstead, who would leave the school as the leading goal-scorer in school history (a title he would hold for seven years); and Paul Turin, a star goalkeeper who would go onto to play for the Tulsa Roughnecks in Pele's NASL.
Despite losing in the first round of the NCAA tourney to Clemson, the 1979 season will be remembered as one that forever set the standard of excellence for Carolina soccer.
