Jimmy Connors defeated John McEnroe 3–6, 6–3, 6–7, 7–6, 6–4 in the final to win the Gentlemen's Singles tennis title at the 1982 Wimbledon Championships.^[1]

Some notable player absences in this season's tournament included:

Five-time champion Bjorn Borg, who was injured for most of 1982, refused to play after Wimbledon officials required him to play in a qualifier tournament because of his absence from the tour.^[2]
Ivan Lendl and Eliot Teltscher, citing difficulty playing on grass courts.,^[3]
Guillermo Vilas and Jose-Luis Clerc, both natives of Argentina, in protest over their country's conflict with the United Kingdom over the Falkland Islands.^[4]
