The 1989 Malawi earthquake occurred on March 10 with a moment magnitude of 6.3 and a maximum Mercalli intensity of VII (Very strong). At least nine people were killed, 100 were injured, and about 50,000 were left homeless. There was damage was in the Salima-Dedza-Mchinji area,[4] and it was felt strongly in much of central Malawi, the Niassa and Tete Provinces of Mozambique, and parts of Zambia.[4]
