Top seed and 1989 champion Boris Becker was eliminated in the third round by Paul Haarhuis.
Perennial favorite Andre Agassi was eliminated in the first round by Aaron Krickstein.
Thirty-nine-year-old and five-time champion Jimmy Connors entered the tournament as a wildcard and made it all the way to the semifinals before losing to eventual runner-up Jim Courier.
