The 1992 Eric Clapton World Tour was a world concert tour helt by the British rock musician Eric Clapton with part-time support of Elton John and special support guests Bonnie Raitt, Curtis Stigers, Jimmy Rogers, Joe Cocker, Paul Barrere, Tony Joe White and Zucchero Fornaciari. Eric Clapton visited Europe and the United States in both two legs in 1992, holding a total of 72 sold out live concerts. The tour kicked off on February 1, 1992 and came to an end on September 6, the same year. During the tour, Clapton and his friends promoted the album releases Journeyman (1989), Unplugged (1992) as well as the singles "Runaway Train" and "It's Probably Me", both released in 1992. The average price of a concert ticket was 55 US-Dollars.

Personnel and equipment

The 1989 Soldano/Cornish system.

For the seventy-two concert dates around the world, Clapton chose to travel with a band that he would not have to change according to different setlists or projects and artists he would perform with. Clapton, played both the electric guitar for rock songs and a nylon string acoustic guitar for his performances of "Tears in Heaven" and "Circus Left Town". As for his main house band, Clapton chose Andy Fairweather Low for rhythm guitar and background vocals, Nathan East on bass guitar and backing vocals, Steve Ferrone on drums, Ray Cooper as the percussionist and Chuck Leavell on keyboards, Hammond organ and background vocals.[1] As for the female backing vocals Clapton wanted to have during his performances in 1992, the British rock musician changed his line up according to how he felt between Tessa Niles, Katie Kissoon, Maggie Ryder and Gina Foster.[2] Eric Clapton was equipped by Giorgio Armani himself with various stage suits, shoes, shirts, T-shirts and accessories.[3] Elton John, though, wore Gianni Versace clothing and accessories only, sparking a feud between Armani and Versace, ending also Eric Clapton's friendship and work relationship with the Versace family. Clapton previously wore Versace for his Journeyman World Tour in 1990 and 1991.[3] As before, Clapton used his 1989 Soldano/Cornish guitar routing system, which was built for him by Soldano Custom Amplification and Pete Cornish, to achieve a studio-like sound for his live performances.[4]

Setlist, releases, guests

The 1992 world tour was set out to promote both his 1989 studio album release Journeyman and his new live release Unplugged from 1992, which would become one of the best both commercially and musically successful albums of all time. Clapton would perform songs from both albums including "Running on Faith", "Pretending", "Before You Accuse Me", "Old Love" and "Anything for Your Love".[5] On the tour, the British rock musician would first perform his hit songs "Tears in Heaven" and "Circus Left Town" in front of a larger audience. Besides these tunes, Clapton, of course, played classic rock songs he is known for like "White Room", "Sunshine of Your Love", "Layla", "Wonderful Tonight", "Badge", "Tearing Us Apart" and "Crossroads". During Elton John's set, the duo performed their new single release "Runaway Train".[6] The music video for the single mentioned earlier was shot at London's Wembley Stadium during the world tour.[7] The tour featured the special musical guest Elton John for some performances of the tour. Special support was held by Bonnie Raitt, Curtis Stigers, Paul Barrere, Jimmy Rogers, Joe Cocker, Tony Joe White and Zucchero Fornaciari.[8]
