Summary

Ginebra San Miguel won their first game of the season on February 28 against 7-Up, 116-103, the Gins lost their next five games and in danger of being eliminated, the Ginebras recovered to win their final four games in the elimination round, defeating Alaska, 113-103 on March 26, [1] Swift, 99-98 on March 28, Coney Island, 84-79 on April 4, and ousting 7-Up two nights later for an even 5-5 won-lost slate. The Ginebras lost all their four games in the one-round quarterfinals.

In the Commissioner's Cup, Ginebra brought in Tony Massop, the 6'6" number 1 draft pick in the Continental Basketball League in 1991, as their import after original choice Brian Gilgeous was sent home even before the second conference started. After leading the Gins to two victories in four games, Massop refused to play in their next game against San Miguel upon discovering that a certain import Eric Meeks, a recommendee by retired Ginebra cager Francis Arnaiz, was present and brought in secretly to try out for playing coach Sonny Jaworski, Massop left and packed his bags as the Gins played the San Miguel Beermen without an import and were fined P50,000. Brian Shorter plane in and played four games but after a lackluster performance in Ginebra's 91-97 loss to winless Sta.Lucia Realtors in Dumaguete City on July 17, Shorter left the squad without giving notice, sources said he was reprimanded by coach Jaworski after the game, prompting him to sneak out of the country. Ginebra played their last two games with their fifth reinforcement Benny Bolton, who played in the PBA using his islam name Benjamin Muhammad. After Ginebra was booted out in the second conference, forward Dondon Ampalayo, the 1986 rookie of the year, who played all of his 7 seasons with Ginebra and has been part of the ballclub's three championships from 1986-1991, asked for a trade to play for Alaska, in return, Ginebra got Bobby Jose from the Milkmen.

Terry Thames arrived and measured at 6-foot-1 in time for Ginebra's first game in the Governor's Cup on September 26. Thames was impressive in scoring 40 points despite the loss to Alaska, 98-102. [2] Ginebra won their next game against Shell Helix, 109-101 in Davao City on October 2, but lost their remaining eight games in the eliminations. Ginebra overall had a dismal 9-win, 26-loss season record.
