• January - As part of major changes on the network, old music (typically anything recorded before 1990) is banned from the Radio 1 daytime playlist.
• 14 February - Talk Radio UK becomes the last of three national commercial radio stations to go on air. It broadcasts on the old Radio 1 mediumwave frequency.
• April - Chris Evans takes over the Radio 1 breakfast show from Steve Wright, who left the network following differences with the station's new management over restructuring.
• 27 September - The BBC begins regular Digital Audio Broadcasting, from the Crystal Palace transmitting station.
• Unknown - Radio Harmony is rebranded as Kix 96 and changes frequency.
• Unknown - Malcolm Laycock's Sunday Night at 10, a programme featuring big band and dance band music begins airing on BBC Radio 2.
• Unknown - BBC Radio Scotland's irreverent sports show Off the Ball makes its debut.
