The 49th Cannes Film Festival was held on May 9–20, 1996. The Palme d'Or went to the Secrets & Lies by Mike Leigh.[2][3][4]

The festival opened with Ridicule, directed by Patrice Leconte[5][6][7] and closed with Flirting with Disaster, directed by David O. Russell.[8][9]
