The 1998 Big Ten tournament was the inaugural tournament for the conference and was played from March 5 to March 8, 1998. The tournament was held at the United Center in Chicago, and won by the Michigan.

Due to NCAA sanctions, Michigan has vacated the records from this tournament. Similarly, Minnesota's appearance in this tournament was vacated.

All Big Ten schools play in the tournament. Teams are seeded by conference record, with a tiebreaker system used to seed teams with identical conference records.

Seeding for the tournament was determined at the close of the regular conference season.
