Associazione Calcio Milan won no significant trophies in spite of a relatively successful season. Juventus proved too strong in the league, although the Turin club was later stripped of the title in the aftermath of the 2006 Italian football scandal. Milan was found guilty to a lesser extent for similar offenses, and thus did not inherit the title.
What is mostly remembered from the 2004–05 Milan season is the infamous defeat against Liverpool in the Champions League final. Captain Paolo Maldini scored in the first minute, and with two goals from Argentinian striker Hernán Crespo, Milan looked sure to take another Champions League crown. But in the second half, Milan lost concentration combined with a furious Liverpool attack, that saw Steven Gerrard and Vladimír Šmicer pull one goal back each, before Xabi Alonso levelled the score sheet on his own penalty rebound. Milan retook the advantage, but despite a great double opportunity for top scorer Andriy Shevchenko, the game went to penalties, where several Milan players missed their spot-kicks, ensuring Liverpool were able to celebrate the title in front of a humbled Milan squad.
