Main article: 2009 Australian Open

The 2009 men's tournament is considered to be one of the best Grand Slam tournaments in open era history.[1] It is remembered for containing many of the best matches of the 2009 year,[2] including the Nadal versus Verdasco semi final (lasting 5 hours and 14 minutes[3]) and the Nadal versus Federer final.[4] It is noteworthy for being the first hard court Grand Slam in which Nadal made the final or won.[5]

Novak Djokovic was the defending champion, but retired due to heat stress trailing two sets to one in the quarterfinals against Andy Roddick.

Rafael Nadal won in the final, 7–5, 3–6, 7–6(7–3), 3–6, 6–2, against Roger Federer and became the first Spanish singles player to win the tournament.[6][7]
