2009 Football League One play-off Final
The 2009 Football League One play-off Final was a football match played at Wembley Stadium on 24 May 2009, at the end of the 2008–09 season. The match determined the third and final team to gain promotion from League One to the Championship, and was contested by Millwall, who finished fifth during the league season, and Scunthorpe United, who finished sixth. The teams reached the final by defeating Leeds United and Milton Keynes Dons respectively in the two-legged semi-finals.
Route to the final
Millwall finished the regular season in 5th place in the League One table, one position above Scunthorpe. In the play-off semi-finals, Millwall faced 4th-placed Leeds United. Neil Harris scored to give them a 1–0 victory in the first leg at The Den.[1] In the second match, Jermaine Beckford missed a first-half penalty for Leeds before Luciano Becchio scored to level the tie for Leeds. However Abdou equalised for Millwall and sent them through 2–1 on aggregate.
Scunthorpe met Milton Keynes Dons in their semi-final. The first leg at Glanford Park finished 1–1, with Aaron Wilbraham cancelling out Martyn Woolford's opener for Scunthorpe. The second match ended 0–0 after extra-time and the match was decided on a penalty shoot-out.
