Maria Sharapova was the defending champion, but lost in the fourth round to Lucie Šafářová.

Serena Williams won her third French Open title and 20th major overall, defeating first-time Grand Slam finalist Šafářová in the final, 6–3, 6–7(2–7), 6–2. This win also gave Williams her third Career Grand Slam.[1][2]

This was the first Grand Slam tournament in which Ana Ivanovic reached the semi-finals since winning the French Open in 2008.[3]
