The Human Chain for Madhesh Movement was held on Thursday 1 October 2015,[4] which set a record as the longest human chain of 1155 km. The protest was participated in by 1.5 million Madhesi people of Nepal with the goal of pressuring the Government of Nepal to make amendments to the constitution of Nepal that came in effect on 20 September 2015.[5] This chain has broken the record made on 11 December 2004, over 5 million people joined hands to form a human chain, 1,050 km (652.4 miles) long from Teknaf Upazila to Tentulia, Bangladesh.[6]

Movement

The main motive of the formation of human chain is to show the unity between Madhesi people.The Madheshi People are indigenous people of Terai Nepal. The Indigenous people of Terai Nepal are Madheshi, Tharu, Rajbanshi, Koche, Satar, Danuwar etc. The Madheshi people, the indigenous (locals) are protesting for last 2 months to make sure they get their right place in the new constitution of Nepal.[7] Almost 50 civilians lost their life during the protest. It was believed that the human chain protest was organized to establish the fact that the movement was organized in peaceful way.[8] The human chain was formed near the India-Nepal boarder on Postal Highway (Hulaki Highway) from starting in East of Nepal (Mechi Zone) to far west of Nepal (Mahakali Zone) where almost 1.5 million civilians participated, The United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) led almost tens of thousands of indigenous from different districts of the Terai region on Thursday hold hands of locals to form the longest human chain along the Postal highway.[9]
