The 2016–17 George Washington Colonials men's basketball team will represent George Washington University during the 2016–17 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Colonials, led by sixth year head coach Mike Lonergan, will play their home games at the Charles E. Smith Center and are members of the Atlantic 10 Conference.

Previous season

The 2015–16 GW Colonials finished the season with an overall record of 28–10, with a record of 11–7 in the Atlantic 10 regular season in fifth place. In the 2016 Atlantic 10 Tournament, the Colonials reached the quarterfinals but lost to Saint Joseph's 86–80 after leading by 14 in the first half.[1] The Colonials did not receive a bid to the 2016 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament but did receive a bid to the 2016 National Invitation Tournament where they were given a 4 seed and reached the finals where they eventually defeated Valparaiso 76–60 to win the tournament.
