† 2017 Big East Tournament winner Rankings from AP Poll |
The 2016–17 Villanova Wildcats men's basketball team represents Villanova University in the 2016–17 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. Led by the school's 8th head coach Jay Wright, the Wildcats participate in the Big East Conference and play their home games at The Pavilion, with some select home games at the Wells Fargo Center.
Previous season
The Wildcats finished the season 35–5, 16–2 in Big East play to win the Big East regular season championship. In the Big East Tournament they defeated Georgetown and Providence, but ultimately lost to Seton Hall in the championship game. They received an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, being awarded the #2 seed in the south region where they defeated #15 seed UNC Asheville in the first round, then #7 seed Iowa in the second round, then #3 seed Miami in the Sweet 16, then upset overall #1 seed Kansas. The Wildcats advanced to their 5th Final Four appearance, where they defeated #2 seed Oklahoma and advanced to the 3rd national championship game where they defeated the #1 seed North Carolina to earn the second NCAA Championship title in school history, the first since 1985. With their 34th win of the season, a 95-51 win over Oklahoma in the Final Four of the 2016 NCAA Tournament (the largest margin of victory in Final Four history), the Wildcats set a single season program record for wins; they would eventually finish the season with 35. In beating #3 Miami (AP #10), #1 Kansas (AP #1), #2 Oklahoma (AP #7) and #1 UNC (AP #3), Villanova became the first school in 31 years — since the 1985 Villanova Wildcats — to not only beat four top-three seeds on the way to a national title but to also beat four straight opponents ranked in the AP top 10.
