The 2016 Kilkenny Senior Hurling Championship will be the 122nd staging of the Kilkenny Senior Hurling Championship since its establishment in by the Kilkenny County Board in 1887. The championship will begin in September 2016 and is scheduled to end in October 2016.

Clara will be the defending champions.[1][2] This was their third championship title, their first in two championship seasons.

Teams

All but one of the twelve teams from the 2015 championship will participate in the top tier of Kilkenny hurling in 2016.

Bennettsbridge, who defeated St. Patrick's by 1-16 to 1-14 in a replayed final of the intermediate championship in 2015, availed of their right to automatic promotion to the senior championship.

Similarly, St. Martin's defeated Carrickshock by 2-13 to 0-13 in the 2015 senior relegation play-off, and so Carrickshock were relegated to the intermediate grade for 2016.[3]
