The 2016 Mississippi State Bulldogs football team will represent Mississippi State University in the 2016 NCAA Division I FBS football season. The Bulldogs will play their home games at Davis Wade Stadium in Starkville, Mississippi, and compete in the Western Division of the Southeastern Conference (SEC). They will be led by eighth year head coach Dan Mullen.

Schedule

Mississippi State announced its 2016 football schedule on October 29, 2015. The 2016 schedule consists of 6 home and away games in the regular season. The Bulldogs will host SEC foes Arkansas, Auburn, South Carolina, and Texas A&M, and will travel to Alabama, Kentucky, LSU, and Ole Miss.[1]

The Bulldogs will host the South Carolina Gamecocks for the first time since 2011. The team will travel to two Football Independent Schools, Massachusetts (UMass) for the first time and to Brigham Young (BYU) for the first time since 2000. Mississippi State will host the other two non–conference games against Samford of the Southern Conference and South Alabama of the Sun Belt Conference.

The Bulldogs will begin the 2016 campaign at home against South Alabama. The contest will be the third ever between the Bulldogs and Jaguars. The two met previously in 2012 and 2014 with Mississippi State winning both.

In the second game of the season Mississippi State will host conference foe South Carolina. The Bulldogs were defeated by the Gamecocks in their last meeting in 2013. It was the Bulldogs' seventh loss in a row against the Gamecocks. The Bulldogs have not beaten the Gamecocks since the 1999 contest.

The Bulldogs will travel to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to face the Tigers of LSU in their first matchup on the road. Mississippi State lost to Tigers last season by two points when a field goal attempt as time expired was no good. The Bulldogs will look to try to win back-to-back games in Baton Rouge for the first time since the 1981 & 1983 contests.

First Meeting

The Bulldogs will then travel to the northeast for the first time since 1986 when they played against Syracuse in New York. UMass will host Mississippi State in the first ever matchup between the two programs at Gillette Stadium (home of the New England Patriots) in Foxborough, Massachusetts.

The 2015 meeting in Auburn saw the Bulldogs defeated the Tigers 17–9 while holding Auburn without a touchdown. Mississippi State will look to get 3 straight victories against Auburn for the first time since defeating the Tigers in four consecutive contests from 1997-2000. The last time the two teams met at Davis Wade Stadium (in 2014) both were ranked in the top 5 and the game set the current attendance record at 62,945.

Mississippi State will next travel to Kentucky. The Bulldogs have won 7 straight in the series two and coach Dan Mullen has never lost to the Wildcats as a head coach. The previous matchup between the two teams at Commonwealth Stadium in 2014 marked the first time that Mississippi State competed as the #1 team in the country in program history.
