940 AM is a proposed radio station in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The new station is owned by Tietolman-Tétrault-Pancholy Media (TTP), a company controlled by business partners Rajiv Pancholy, Paul Tietolman and Nicolas Tétrault.[1]
History
On November 21, 2011, 7954689 Canada Inc. received approval by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) to operate a new French-language talk radio station in Montreal.[2] The same company was also subsequently licensed to launch an English-language talk radio station at 600 AM.[3]
As of October 2014, none of the stations that the TTP group applied for had signed on. On September 19, 2014, the CRTC had given the TTP group another year to commence broadcasting on 600 and 940, but warned that that extension was the second and final one allowed for 940, in which the license would be cancelled if that station did not commence broadcasting by November 21, 2015.[4] However, the CRTC reversed itself, as it granted TTP another one-year extension for both stations on October 30, 2015, due to what they cited was "certain exceptional cases." TTP now must sign on 940 by November 21, 2016 or face cancellation of its license.[5]
The 940 kHz frequency in Montreal was previously occupied by CINW until it closed down in 2011. The frequency was also used for many years by CBC Radio outlet CBM, until relocating to 88.5 FM in 1998.
