9 Deadly Venoms is the debut album by Depth Charge, and alias of UK producer Jonathan Saul Kane. The album compiles several 12" singles released by Kane under the Depth Charge name in the preceding five years. Kane is often cited as a forerunner of trip hop and an influence on labels such as Mo'Wax and Ninja Tune.[1] The tracks on the album comprise instrumental hip-hop beats with dialogue and musical samples from films, particularly martial arts movies, westerns and horror films.

Some sources have claimed that the versions of the tracks included on the CD version of the album are shorter edits, and that the vinyl contains the longer, unedited 12" versions. However, this is not the case.[2] Initial copies of the CD version came with a bonus disc featuring extra tracks from the Hubba Hubba Hubba EP.

Samples

Shaolin Buddha Finger contains dialogue from the film Shaolin Vs Lama.[3]
Dead By Dawn contains dialogue from the film The Evil Dead.
Bounty Killer contains dialogue from the films For A Few Dollars More and High Plains Drifter and a musical sample from the track Fast Forward Into Dub by Mad Professor.[4]
Depth Charge contains dialogue from the film Incredible Shaolin Thunderkick.[5]
Bounty Killer II contains a musical sample from La Resa Dei Conti (Sixty Seconds to What) by Ennio Morricone,[6] and dialogue, both from the film For A Few Dollars More.
Goal contains a recording of former Brazilian footballer and commentator José Altafini. The same recording was later used in the track I'm Stronger Now by Definitive Two, which was used as the theme music for the UK TV programme Football Italia.[7]
Hubba Hubba Hubba (What's In The Bag Man?) features dialogue from the film Dirty Harry.
