The A1 (Portuguese: Auto-estrada do Norte) is the principal motorway (freeway) in Portugal. It connects Lisbon, the capital, to Porto, the country's second-largest city, and serves other important cities like Santarém, Leiria, Coimbra and Aveiro. A1 is operated by Brisa - Auto-estradas de Portugal, S.A.
Construction on A1 began in 1961 and was completed in 1991. It extends 303 km, comprising 26 interchanges, 7 service areas and 2 leisure rest areas (Fátima and Oiã).
