ADZU Social Development Council includes an institute and three centers, with a common goal of bringing greater, peace, harmony, and integral human development to the diverse peoples served by Ateneo de Zamboanga University in Western Mindanao, Philippines.[1]

Through its social development outreach, ADZU addresses the challenges presented by impoverished people, conflict, globalization, and climate change, amidst the diverse communities on the island of Mindanao. It looks to work for healing and for a just peace while supporting eco-friendly development, with special attention to the poorest sectors of society. Leadership education and social transformation are central to its efforts.[2]

Programs

Ateneo Peace Institute (API). Cultural conflict in Mindanao goes back to the intrusion of the Spanish 450 years ago into this formerly Moslem preserve, and persists in migration and turmoil amongst various ethnic groups, with sporadic conflict and military action.[3] API responds with research, education, and consulting work in conjunction with others, fostering dialogue among various religious and cultural groups, as well as youth activities.[4]

Center for Community Extension Services (CCES) since 1993 has been collaborating with other development organizations and with marginalized communities to improve literacy, health, and livelihood, with special attention to isolated communities in the area and on neighboring islands.[5]

Social Awareness and Community Service Involvement (SACSI). The acronym “SACSI” is Filipino for “witness”, which is the task of this organization internal to the university. It's purpose is to increase awareness within the university of the realities of life outside,[6] to foster among both students and faculty the Jesuit ideal of being men and women for others.[7] It trains and handles placement of student and faculty volunteers in service opportunities.[8]

Ateneo Center for Leadership and Governance (ACLG). This training center for leaders from both government and civil society extends its efforts to dialogue, advocacy, networking, and interdisciplinary research.[9] Its projects include efforts to secure peaceful and fair elections.[10]
