AKM Fazlul Haque (surgeon)


Professor Doctor. AKM Fazlul Haque (born 25 January 1958) was the pioneer leader in Colorectal Surgery. He was the founder of the Department of Colorectal Surgery in Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Dhaka (বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিব মেডিক্যাল ইউনিভার্সিটি), the only Medical University of Bangladesh. He Served the Government health service in Bangladesh from April 1982 to 2009. He is not only Pioneer of Colorectal Surgery Specialty in Bangladesh, but also the Pioneer Colorectal Surgeon in Indo-Pak Subcontinent (India, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Pakistan). He was awarded Fellowship ( FCPS ) in January 1989 from Bangladesh College of Physician and Surgeons.

In Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), there was no Colorectal Surgery Department. But Under his pioneering leadership, Colorectal Surgery became an independent Department and he also designed the course for the university. International Scholarship award from American society of colon and rectal surgeons is a prestigious and rare award whis is given to a single surgeon every year on worldwide competition basis. Professor Dr. AKM Fazlul Haque obtained this award in the year of 2000.He was the third surgeon to receive this award in Asia and seventh in the world.

His skill became unparalleled while consulting 150,000 patients and operating 35,000 patients in different government’s and private hospitals and cured patients having Piles, Fistula, Anal Fissure, Colon and Rectal Cancer, Polyp, Rectal Prolapse & Diverticulitis.

He is the author of widely circulated book on colorectal surgery for public. He was a visiting faculty in Tribhubon University, Nepal.
