Astro (Hangul: 아스트로) (stylized as ASTRO) is a South Korean boy band formed by Fantagio in 2015. The group is composed of six members: Jinjin, MJ, Cha Eunwoo, Moonbin, Rocky, and Yoon Sanha.[1] On August 14, Fantagio released information about the new group via their social media, including pictures and profiles of each member and the announcement of the group's name. Astro means 'star' in Spanish, so the group was named that so they can be stars to those who love them.[2] Astro released their debut mini album Spring Up on February 23, 2016.[3] They released their first music video Hide & Seek on February 22, 2016.
History
Predebut project
Before Astro was formed, the members started out as trainees under Fantagio iTeen, a rookie talent development program under Fantagio Entertainment. They were previously known as iTeen Boys.
Through the same technique as how Fantagio formed 5urprise, Astro starred in a web drama series, titled To Be Continued on August 2015.[4] The members starred as themselves along with Kim Sae-ron, 5urprise member Seo Kang-joon and Hello Venus.[5]
On January 2016, Astro starred in their own reality show, Astro OK! Ready, which was aired on MBC Every1 at 7PM KST.[6] The group also made an appearance on KBS variety show, Golden Bell Challenge.[7]
2016: Debut with Spring Up
Astro's first mini album, Spring Up was released on February 23, 2016 with the title song "Hide & Seek".[8] They also announced their official fanclub name: AROHA, which is an abbreviation for ASTRO Hearts All Fans.[9]
Only three weeks after their debut, Spring Up entered the Billboard World Albums Chart at number 6.[10]
