A Day Without Rain is the fifth studio album from the Irish musician Enya, released in November 2000 on WEA Records. Three years after the release of her previous album, The Memory of Trees (1995), Enya started work on a new album with lyricist Roma Ryan and producer and arranger Nicky Ryan.

It became a commercial success worldwide, reaching No. 6 in the UK and No. 2 in the US, where it went on to sell 7 million copies. Its lead single, "Only Time", reached No. 10 in the US after it was identified with the 11 September 2001 attacks through extensive media use. In 2002, the album won a Grammy Award for Best New Age Album. A Day Without Rain became the fifth highest selling album of 2001 and remains Enya's biggest selling album of her career with an estimated 15 million sold worldwide.[2][3] It is the top selling new age album of the 2000s in the US.[4]

A Day Without Rain received mixed reviews. Many critics reviewed it unfavorably because they felt it was too derivative without taking the quality (weather good or bad) of it into account. Many fans praise it and consider it to be her best album. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the album received an average score of 41, which indicates "mixed or average reviews", based on 8 reviews. Stephen Thompson of The A.V. Club found it too derivative of Enya's previous albums, which he found far superior to A Day Without Rain.[12] In his review for The Village Voice, Robert Christgau panned the album as nonsense, "goopier, more simplistic" than her breakthrough 1988 album Watermark.[11]

In a positive review, Billboard magazine complimented the album's production and said that the more experimental songs such as "Only Time" and "Lazy Days" "not only freshen a musical formula that still works extremely well but also leave the listener happily curious about Enya's next move.[13] People recommended the "masterful" album for a "rainy day" because of Enya's characteristic sound and tranquil mood.[14]

Commercial performance

A Day Without Rain went on to become Enya's biggest selling release of her career and the fifth highest selling album worldwide of 2001.[2] It has sold over 15 million copies.[3] It was the top selling new age album of the 2000s in the US, according to Nielsen SoundScan.[4]

Singles

"Only Time" was first released in November 2000 as a single. It coincided with the release of the album. In 2001, "Only Time" was released again as a remix. The track was remixed by the Swiss American Federation (S.A.F.) (Christian B. and Marc Dold) with a final remix by Enya's producer, Nicky Ryan. Enya donated the earnings from the sale of that single to the Uniform Firefighters Association's Widows' and Children's Fund to help the families of fire fighters in the aftermath of 9/11.[15] The song was also featured in the soundtrack of the motion picture Sweet November. To date, "Only Time" is Enya's biggest solo hit in the United States, where it peaked at #10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart[16] and #1 on the adult contemporary chart.[17]

Wild Child was released as the second single in Germany, Japan, and Korea, the single was published only on Compact Disc; in the United Kingdom, it was also published on cassette. "Wild Child" was used as the title sequence of the Japanese film Calmi Cuori Appassionati (2001). Eurodance music duo CJ Crew recorded an uptempo dance mix of the song, which appeared on the compilation album Dancemania Speed 10 (2002).[18] The song charted on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart and number 10.[19] The B-side to "Wild Child", "Midnight Blue" (originally an instrumental piece which has now been extended and vocals have been added. This version is now the title track from her November 2008 CD And Winter Came....)
