A History of Violence is a British Hip Hop duo comprising Suffolk-based rapper In2ition (real name Tom Houlton) and Bristol-based producer/rapper The Etherealist (real name Jak Noble), signed to their own label Dopesick Records (formerly known as MOTD Records).[1][2] Their debut mixtape Plead for Your Life was released on November 10, 2014.[3]
Biography
2011-2013: Early collaborations, Outlook for Future and formation
In2ition and The Etherealist began working together when In2ition took up rapping in 2011. The Etherealist, who had produced for and rapped as part of Comedy hip hop trio J. Unit in the past[4] (as well as having found a fanbase in metal music for his solo project Returning We Hear the Larks), featured on and subsequently mixed down a bootleg album of In2ition's freestyle sessions. Following this collaboration, In2ition sought The Etherealist's assistance in producing an EP. Though never fully finished, In2ition's Outlook for Future EP was fully produced by The Etherealist and the finished tracks were distributed by his label.[5]
The two continued to collaborate on freestyle sessions albums together and in winter 2013, In2ition approached The Etherealist with a number of recorded verses that he hoped to turn into a finished track. The Etherealist composed a beat for the track within a day and the finished song, entitled "Shit" was released as a single shortly after.[6] The two fed off of each other's passion for music and soon many more tracks came to fruition. Before long, In2ition suggested that the duo work towards creating an album, to be produced entirely by The Etherealist. This formed the basis of what would become In2ition's debut album The Shit LP.[7][8] During the months spent working on the album, The Etherealist visited In2ition in Suffolk. Following another recording of a freestyle session (the unreleased Battle Madness: The Freestyles), the two decided to form a rap duo. The name 'A History of Violence' was chosen from a list of film titles/quotes, as In2ition is a lover of film.
2013-2014: The Shit LP and Plead for Your Life
Shortly after their inception, the duo released their self-titled buzz single.[9] While working on In2ition's The Shit LP in the spring of 2014, The Etherealist suggested that they build a promotional mixtape, comprising new studio tracks by A History of Violence as well as unreleased freestyles and solo tracks by the members. In2ition liked this idea and the duo worked on both releases simultaneously until October 27, 2014, when In2ition's The Shit LP was released.[10] The 18-track album was produced entirely by The Etherealist as well as featuring him as a rapper on two tracks.
A History of Violence's debut mixtape, named Plead for Your Life after In2ition's lyrics "get down on your knees / you better make sure that you plead before I finish this weed",[11] was released on November 10, 2014,[12][13] only two weeks after The Shit LP. The mixtape includes guest features from rappers Bolly, Oldboy, G-Magz (who was a member of J. Unit with The Etherealist[14]) and actor/rapper Rodney Rush, famed for his role in AMC's hit television drama Breaking Bad.[15] The Etherealist produced a number of tracks for the mixtape, though many of the songs use other artist's beats. Plead for Your Life features studio tracks by the duo, solo studio tracks by both members, freestyles and bootleg remixes. The release was mixed and mastered by The Etherealist and distributed on his label Murder on the Dancefloor Records.[16]
2015-present: Dopesick Records and debut album
In Summer 2015, The Etherealist asked In2ition to become his label partner and Murder on the Dancefloor Records was rebranded as Dopesick Records, an exclusively hip-hop label.[17] The duo are planning a compilation mixtape as an introduction for the label.
Following the release of Plead for Your Life, the duo have set their sights on creating a debut album, to be produced entirely by The Etherealist, as with The Shit LP.
In2ition's sophomore album is also in the works.
