Abbot of Tongland

The Abbot of Tongland (later Commendator of Tongland) was the head of the Premonstratensian (originally Cistercian) monastic community of Tongland Abbey in Dumfries and Galloway. The following is a list of abbots and commendators:

  3. Became Abbot of Dundrennan (1529-41).
  4. As Abbot of Melrose 1525-1541; became Bishop of Galloway (1541-58)
  5. Also Archbishop of Glasgow (1550–1), Bishop of Galloway (1559–72) and Bishop of the Isles (1553–72).
  6. Bishop of Galloway (1575-1586).
  7. Bishop of Galloway (1578x1579-1586/7).
