Aberangell railway station was a railway station on the Cambrian Railways branch which ran from Cemmaes Road to Dinas Mawddy in the Welsh county of Merionethshire. The station was opened by the Mawddwy Railway in 1867 and closed to all goods traffic in 1908. It was then purchased by the Great Western Railway in 1923, and continued to remain upon to all passenger and freight traffic until the 1930s and 1950s, respectively. The station was the contact point between the branch and the Hendre-Ddu Tramway.
History
The line was first opened in 1867, however it was closed to passenger traffic in 1901, and closed to all goods traffic in 1908. The Aberangell line was reopened on 31 July July 1911 as a light railway system, as a result of the support of several local councils.[1] The station was incorporated, as part of the Cambrian Railways, into the Great Western Railway during the Grouping of 1923, thus closing the Aberangell line to passenger services in 1931, although the line continued to remain open for freight traffic until the 1950s.[1]
The line also served a local quarry in Minllyn, which opened in 1840. Despite the standard gauge connection with the Aberangell and Dinas Mawddwy railway station, there was never a high extraction rate in the quarry. Although the line at Aberangell had a passenger service it was primarily intended for slate quarry traffic. The quarry eventually closed but was reopened and re-equipped in 1872. For a short period it had a workforce of over 100 and produced an annual extraction of 100 tonnes a year.[2]
Route
The line ran through several remote villages in Merionethshire which included those in the Upper Dovey Valley and the individual village of Dinas Mawddwy, however the station was included 0.5 miles (0.80 km) away from the centre of Dinas Mawddwy due to the terrain making it impossible to commence construction there.[1] The nearby Dinas Mawddy line (connecting to Aberangell) also served the Minllyn State Quarry, which had a short tramway running through the station to the processing mill at the base of a steep wooded hill in the Upper Dovey Valley.[3]
