Abercorn School is a British independent prep school for pupils aged 2 to 13 years, divided across several locations in London. Its main administrative centre is located in St John's Wood, London. It was opened in 1987 by Andrea Greystoke with only 42 pupils, and has gradually expanded in reputation and size to 400 pupils.[1]
Abercorn's youngest pupils (2½ – 6½ years) are housed in a Grade II listed mansion, the home of the Victorian landscape artist, John O'Connor who used the school hall as his private studio.
The Middle School (7½ – 9½ years) is in the Grade II listed premises of the former St Marylebone Grammar School. Built in 1856, it has wood panels, arched doorways and stained glass windows. The school is located near numerous cultural attractions such as museums, art galleries and theatres, including the Open Air Theatre and Regent's Park.
The Abercorn Upper School (9½ – 13 years) is located at 38 Portland Place, within the historic Howard de Walden Estate. The building has been adapted to provide teaching facilities.
Abercorn Prep uses the National Curriculum as a basis for teaching. Independent secondary schools which pupils typically move on to include St Paul's School, Westminster School, City of London School for Boys, North London Collegiate, UCS and Francis Holland.
French is taught from Nursery level and Latin is introduced from Year 5. The swimming teams regularly compete in National Championships and have won the ISA North London Schools Swimming Championship several times in the last five years.
Abercorn School is registered with the Independent Association of Preparatory Schools.[2][3]
Th Abercorn Schools Group has international outreach with its two sister schools in the United States, namely The British International School of New York (BIS-NY) and Abercorn International School in Austin, Texas.
