Acanthospermum australe (Paraguayan starburr,[3][4] Ihi kukae hipa, Paraguay bur, Paraquay starbur, Pipili, Sheepbur, Spiny-bur) is a South American species of herbaceous plants first described as a species in 1758.[5][6][7][8]
The species is native to South America and introduced in China and in parts of the United States, Canada, South Africa and currently a widespread pioneer in the tropics and sub-tropics. [9][10][11]
Extracts of Acanthospermum australe have in vitro antiviral activity against herpesvirus and poliovirus,[12] but clinical effects have not been studied.
