Abeona Therapeutics, Inc. is a pharmaceutical development company. Its research focuses on developing treatments for rare diseases using gene therapy and human plasma-derived therapeutics. The company is trying to find ways to address Sanfilippo Syndrome, Fanconi anemia, and Juvenile Batten disease.[1] It has stated it anticipates starting clinical trials on an adeno-associated virus-based gene therapy for Sanfilippo syndrome in 2015.[2]
Abeona also is developing a salt diafiltration process for purifying proteins from blood plasma[3] and a polymer hydrogel for delivering drugs.
Name changes
The company was formerly known as Access Pharmaceuticals. It was based in Dallas and was incorporated in 1989.[4] In 2014, the company changed its name to PlasmaTech Biopharmaceuticals. In 2015, PlasmaTech acquired a company based in Cleveland called Abeona Therapeutics which was founded in 2013.[5] In June 2015, the parent company adopted the name Abeona Therapeutics.[6]
The name Abeona comes from a Roman goddess who was said to protect children.[7] The company's stock is traded on NASDAQ under the symbol ABEO.
