The filming was completed on March 6, 2016.

"I chose this title because it works for the story. It’s about one’s inner courage or the strength that comes from within you. When a difficult situation arises, which people normally run away from, there is this inner voice which tells you, ‘Don’t be afraid. Take this guy on or this moment on’. This film is about that."

Gautham Vasudev Menon on the title and subject of the film, in an interview with The New Indian Express.[1]

Gautham Menon announced in October 2013 that he would produce and direct a film featuring Silambarasan in the lead role.[6] In an interview with Bangalore Mirror, Menon stated that the film was originally titled Sattendru Maarathu Vaanilai.[4] He described the film as one which starts as a "love story" and then enters a "violent / action space."[2] Silambarasan supported this statement, saying that it will be in a similar genre to Menon's previous films Vettaiyaadu Vilayaadu and Yennai Arindhaal.[7] Menon treated the romance differently wherein the hero is not really sure if he is in love but he is in a friendship that opens up gradually.[8] Menon outlined the storyline of the film, stating, "This film is a feel-good love story and a story of friendship. It is the story of a happy-go-lucky guy (played by Silambarasan) who is looking to do normal things in life but then, a situation is thrown at him and it changes everything." The film story is inspired by the scene in the film The Godfather where a bruised Michael Corleone plots revenge against the corrupt policeman McCluskey.[8] Menon has portrayed cops as heroes but the cop is the antagonist. When he was writing the second half of the film, he ensured not to watch films in the other genre. After he saw the film Angadi Theru, he could not write his film script for two weeks.[8]

In December 2013, A. R. Rahman was officially confirmed to compose songs. Dhilip Subbarayan was signed on as stunt choreographer. Though previously Marc Koninckx was reported to handle cinematography, Dan Macarthur was confirmed.[9] Baba Sehgal was chosen to portray a negative role as a cop.[10] By end December 2013, reports stated that Pallavi Sharda had signed a two film contract with Photon Kathaas and would feature as the lead female in the film.[11] However, Menon clarified that it was not Pallavi Sharda, but another actress Pallavi Subhash. He conducted a screen test, auditions and a ten-day workshop before signing her for the film.[12] However, Pallavi Subhash opted out because she had committed to a Hindi TV serial Chakravartin Ashoka Samrat and its dates were overlapping with the film.[13] Later, she was replaced by Manjima Mohan.[14] Actor Vineeth Srinivasan made Menon watch the trailer of Oru Vadakkan Selfie and then Manjima was auditioned and selected for the role.[14] On her role, she stated: "I play the character of someone, who visits her friend on vacation and meets this guy (character played by Silambarasan). It’s different from the role I played in Oru Vadakkan Selfie. In that, I had to underplay my character."[14] Silambarasan's character in the film is about courage and inner strength.[14]

Filming

While the team was still in the process of casting a female lead opposite Silambarasan, principal photography began in mid-November 2013 with a ten-day schedule in Adyar, Chennai. Scenes featuring Silambarasan and Sathish Krishnan were shot.[15] Later, filming continued for ten days with Pallavi Subhash as the female lead. Further, the shooting progressed during the nights, in and around Kalakshetra and Thiruvanmiyur.[9] A second schedule began in early December 2013 featuring scenes with the lead cast in urban Chennai.[16] The film was shot for thirty days and was put on hold until Menon completed filming Yennai Arindhaal.[4] In 2015, Pallavi Subhash couldn't allot bulk dates to the film and was replaced by Manjima Mohan.[17] Filming began from 21 February 2015, reshooting all previous scenes with Manjima Mohan.[17] By September 2015, four songs were filmed and the team was left with 20 days of work.[1] By November 2015, ninety percent of the filming was completed.[17] The next schedule was allotted thirty days.[18] On February 17, 2016, the climax portions were being filmed in Adyar, Chennai. However, a stunt made Silambarasan suffer facial injuries, postponing the filming schedules.[19] The month long schedule was completed in fourteen days except for a song.[18] Filming was officially wrapped up on March 6, 2016.[20]

A. R. Rahman's inclusion in the project was confirmed by December 2013. As per the urgency of shooting, a single track with lyrics penned by Madhan Karky was recorded within three hours by the composer at his studio in Los Angeles.[21] Recording of the songs recommenced from February 2015.[4] By September 2015, recording of all the five tracks by A. R. Rahman was completed.[1] For the sixth track, Rahman was yet to see the film and score it.[1] The music rights were acquired by Divo Movies in 2015.[22]

The soundtrack album has five songs, all placed in the first half of the film.[8] In an interview with The Times of India, Menon confirmed four tracks on the soundtrack album, one being "Idhu Naal Varaiyil".[17] The track "Avalum Naanum", sung by Vijay Yesudas, was used in the first teaser of the film. "Raasaali" is set in the tunes of 90s. The song "Rap Boys" describes bikes and girls in its lyrics.[17]

The fifth track is "Thalli Pogathey" which features vocals by Sid Sriram. It framed the score for the film's official trailer.[23] The song was recorded in the second week of December 2015.[24] On December 31, 2015, the vocals on the track were fine-tuned.[24][25] According to the singer: "The song is about a guy’s longing to express himself to a girl; but not knowing how to go about it and thus, having an inner conversation with himself."[24] The song has rap-vocals by Aaryan Dinesh Kanagaratnam and backing vocals by Aparna Narayanan.[26]

Owing to the popularity of the "Thalli Pogathey", Silambarasan recorded and released a cover version of the song on January 14, 2016.[27][28]

Ethiraj and Dr. Saravanan completed a different film with the same title which was censored and tax exempted.[31] A fifty-second teaser of Menon's film that was released on 3 February 2014.[4][32] However, in February 2015, the title was revealed as Achcham Yenbadhu Madamaiyada.[33]
