Adam Matta is an american beatboxer, singer-songwriter, actor, and artist. Most known for his work as the vocal percussionist for the Carolina Chocolate Drops.[1]
Performance style
Matta's signature style of beatboxing primarily involves techniques such as, mouth drumming, vocal bass, vocal scratches, mouth trumpet,and theatrical vocal sound effects. He often does his performances, with a loop station, a theremin and a bicycle wheel[2] that he uses to simulate turntablism.[3] He has often used his beatboxing as the primary rhythm section for both vocal and [4] instrumental groups.[5]
Career
[6] Matta was a 2006-07 Artist in Residence at Here Arts Center in New York, working on "Makeshift," a one-man show incorporating beatboxing and bicycle performance art. He also was an Artist in Residence at Cornell University[7] in 2007, working on "Beatbox Bard," a performance that mixed beatboxing and Shakespearean sonnets. He appeared as part of the United Way's Literacy Arts Initiative, 9th Annual Student Showcase at the World Famous Apollo Theater, Produced by Plays For Living. He also collaborates with Philip Hamilton in vocal workshops for youth at Lincoln Center. Storycorps/Soundportraits, David Isay's sound booth for recording everyday peoples oral histories, selected a vocal piece with him and his father to represent the project on NPRs "Morning Edition," and at Grand Central Station.
He is well known as a member of the Carolina Chocolate Drops as well as for his performances with artists such as Lori Cotler, Matisyahu ,Akim Funk Buddah, Sxip Shirey,Kid Lucky and Chesney Snow . He has served as a cast member of shows like Bobby Mcferrin's Improvised musical "Bobble" as well as The broadway musical "In transit" as the role of "boxman". He has provided music for projects such as the soundtrack compilation, "The L Word, Season II: Sessions". , and in Benson Lee's 2007 documentary, "Planet B-Boy."[8] His music has been used to promote brands such as Hot Tamales, and Stride Gum . He has released solo records[9] such as Rage Against the Drum Machine and mouth peace.[10]
He composed, performed and recorded with dancer, Faith Pilger for the Edinburgh Festival, and Jesse Phillips-Fein for the DUMBO Dance Festival. He starred in Simin Farkhondehs film Other, and played a supporting role in Unconcealed Weapons by Ryan Edwards. He also appears in Anne Husainis film, Lost on the L, where he performs in a train station.[11]
