The Adventist Health System is a non-profit health care organization which operates facilities within the Southern and Midwestern regions of the United States headquartered in Altamonte Springs, Florida. It is run by the Seventh-day Adventist Church [1] and is the largest not-for-profit Protestant healthcare provider in the nation.[2]
According to Becker’s Hospital Review, Adventist Health System is one of the largest nonprofit health systems in the United States.[3] With more than 40 hospital campuses and nearly 8,200 licensed beds in 10 states, Adventist Health System facilities incorporate the latest technological advancements and clinical research to serve more than 4.7 million patients annually.[4]
History
At the behest of Ellen G. White, the Seventh-day Adventist Church first established the innovative Western Health Reform Institute in Battle Creek, Michigan in 1866, to care for the sick as well as to disseminate health instruction.[5] Over the years, other Adventist sanitariums were established around the country. These sanitariums evolved into hospitals, forming the backbone of the Adventists' medical network.
In 1972, the church decided to centralize the management of its healthcare institutions on a regional basis and, in so doing, formed the Adventist Health System to support and strengthen Seventh-day Adventist healthcare organizations in the Southern and Southwestern regions of the United States.[5]
Ten years later, the regional operations formed a national organization, Adventist Health System/U.S., which management called the largest not-for-profit, multi-institutional healthcare system in the United States.[5]
Adventist Health System organizations currently operate 44 hospitals and 16 nursing homes with more than 7,700+ licensed beds, care for 4 million patients annually in inpatient, outpatient and emergency room visits, and employ 79,000 people.[6]
Philosophy of Care
Although separated by geography, every Adventist Health System facility is united by the mission of Extending the Healing Ministry of Christ. Today, the tradition of whole-person care is carried out by practicing and sharing CREATION Health, a blueprint for healthy, happy living based on the principles given in the Bible’s creation story: Choice, Rest, Environment, Activity, Trust, Interpersonal relationships, Outlook and Nutrition.[7]
Affiliated Hospitals
Established in 1908, Adventist Health System’s flagship facility, Florida Hospital is the largest hospital in the United States, according to Becker’s Hospital Review.[8] It is ranked the No. 1 hospital in the state of Florida and recognized as one of America’s Best Hospitals in nine specialty areas by U.S. News & World Report. These include cardiology and heart surgery, diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology and GI surgery, geriatrics, gynecology, nephrology, neurology and neurosurgery, pulmonology, and urology.[9]
Accolades
- Gallup Great Workplace Award - Adventist Health System has received the Gallup Great Workplace Award for five consecutive years (2011-2015) for creating an engaged workplace culture that drives business outcomes.[10]
- HealthCare's Most Wired - Adventist Health System received HealthCare’s Most Wired Award two years in a row (2013-2014) for meeting specific IT requirements in four focus areas: infrastructure, business and administrative management, clinical quality and safety, and clinical integration.[11]
- Press Ganey Success Story Award - Adventist Health System was recognized with Press Ganey’s Success Story Award in 2014 for its rapid pace of improvement in patient experience over the course of three years. An example of this improvement is the movement of the patient's overall rating of the hospitals as a system into the top quartile of the nation when compared with other organizations in the Press Ganey national database.[12]
