Aftermath is a 2015 Star Wars novel by Chuck Wendig, published by Del Rey Books and set between the films Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. Aftermath is the first of a planned trilogy that will explore events between the two films.[1][2]
The novel is one of 20 projects in Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, a 2015 Star Wars publishing initiative to connect The Force Awakens with previous film installments.[1] It features the characters Wedge Antilles and Rae Sloane, the latter of whom was first introduced in the 2014 novel A New Dawn by John Jackson Miller.[3]
Reception
Aftermath debuted at #4 on The New York Times Best Seller list,[4] and #4 on USA Today's best seller list.[5][6]
IGN awarded the novel a score of 5.9 out of ten, saying "Star Wars: Aftermath is a well-written but ultimately disappointing first look into the post-Endor galaxy."[7]
The novel introduces what Anthony Breznican of Entertainment Weekly calls the first major gay hero within the new Star Wars canon, Imperial turncoat Sinjir Rath Velus.[8] After receiving some fan backlash, Wendig defended the inclusion of the character on his blog, writing "If you can imagine a world where Luke Skywalker would be irritated that there were gay people around him, you completely missed the point of Star Wars."[9]
