Ahmed Hassan Imran

Ahmed Hassan (Bengali: আহমেদ হাসান) alias Imran is a veteran journalist[1] and elected MP of Rajya Sabha from West Bengal, India.[2][3][4][5] He had sworn into the parliament on 9 June 2014.

Early life

Imran was born in the Mal police station area of Jalpaiguri district in West Bengal.[6]

Career

According to a report in the Anandabazar Patrika, in 1975–76 Imran founded West Bengal Muslim Students Association.[7] On 24 April 1977, Imran co-founded the Students Islamic Movement of India in Aligarh Muslim University in Uttar Pradesh. Imran became the president of the West Bengal unit of the organization and held the position till 1980.[7] He started publishing Kalom as the monthly Bengali In 1981. Kalom continued to be published as a monthly till 1994.[7]

According to the Anandabazar Patrika report, Imran became popular in the Islamist circles.[7] He was appointed as the Honorary Counselor of IDB [Islamic Development Bank] Scholarship Programme of the West Bengal zone. Kalom converted into a weekly In 1994. Imran also acted as the India correspondent of a Bengali daily named Naya Diganta published from Bangladesh.He also acted as the news gatherer for the Bengali division of Radio Tehran. In 2011, he handed over Kalom to Sudipta Sen, the CEO of Saradha Group.

Controversy

Ahmed Hassan Imran is allegedly involved in 2007 Kolkata riots and 2013 Canning riots which is presently investigated by the CBI.[8] However, Imran denied the charges and filed a defamation case against BJP's state observer Siddharth Nath Singh.[9] Meanwhile, Trinamool leader Subrata Mukherjee in a statement said, "An investigation will be conducted. If anything is proven then he will be punished. But why label Imran a criminal before that?" In response, BJP's state observer Siddharthnath Singh said, "It would be great if they move the court. Attacking Imran only because he belongs to a minority community is out of question. He is involved in treason. That's why he is being criticised,".[10]

Investigations

The National Investigation Agency and CBI have taken up the probe into the allegations that Trinamool Congress MP Ahmed Hassan Imran had sent Saradha funds to Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh to create unrest in Bangladesh.[11][12] While the investigation is still going on, both NIA and CBI reported that their probes had not found any such links.[13][14] However, CBI also reported that the complete details of investments and fund transfers were still under investigation.[13]
