Aimé Olivier de Sanderval (1840-1919) was a French adventurer and colonialist.

Early life

He was born in Lyon into a major local family who subsequently moved to Marseille. From childhood he was a passionate reader of travelogues such as René Caillié account of his trip to Timbuktu. In 1864 he left the Parisan Central School of Arts and Manufactures which his uncle Theodore Olivier was involved in founding.
