Eiyū Densetsu: Akatsuki no Kiseki (英雄伝説 暁の軌跡), sometimes unofficially called The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Dawn, is an online role-playing game scheduled for release in Japan in 2016. A spin-off of the Trails series of Nihon Falcom's long-running The Legend of Heroes franchise, it is being developed by Taiwanese company UserJoy Technology, and will be operated by its subsidiary UserJoy Japan.
Development history
Early announcements
Akatsuki no Kiseki was first announced in June 2014 as a project to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the Trails series. Falcom's press release included a general description of the setting and artwork for the two main characters: young bracers[note 1] Nacht and Chloe. Their artwork was drawn by Haccan, who had previously worked on character design for Trails in the Sky the 3rd. Akatsuki was initially scheduled to begin service in 2015.[1][2] Though UserJoy Technology rose to fame mainly for PC MMORPGs such as Angel Love Online and The Legend of Three Kingdoms Online, and later began branching out into mobile games, the press releases did not clarify the platform for Akatsuki, nor whether it would be a purely single-player video game or if it would have some type of online multi-player functionality. UserJoy opened a preview site for the game in July 2014.[3][4][5]
In November 2014, during a live event at Shinjuku LoftPlusOne, Falcom president Toshihiro Kondo revealed a few details about the working relationship between Falcom and UserJoy. He noted that Falcom was collaborating closely with UserJoy on the story, and praised the UserJoy Akatsuki no Kiseki development staff for their knowledge of the Trails series, stating that they were ardent fans who knew details about the games that even Falcom employees themselves did not remember. Kondo went on to state that Falcom might consider producing more online games in the future, depending on user response to Akatsuki.[6]
Delay
Neither Falcom nor UserJoy provided any additional news about Akatsuki no Kiseki until December 2015, when Falcom announced that the game had been delayed until 2016. Falcom's press release at the time included the first four screenshots of Akatsuki game play, which showed cel-shaded graphics and in general a different visual style than recent Falcom releases such as Tokyo Xanadu or Trails of Cold Steel, with a battle system resembling the earlier Crossbell arc (Zero and Ao)). Soon after, UserJoy also updated the game's teaser site to provide information about additional characters.[7] No further details were provided about the platform, but some Chinese-language sources later reported in February that Akatsuki would be a browser game, and would likely be released in the second or third quarter of 2016.[8][9]
In late April 2016, Falcom made brief posts about Akatsuki no Kiseki on the company Twitter and Facebook accounts, stating that "full operation is close?"[note 2] Falcom still did not announce a concrete release date, nor did UserJoy add any additional information to the game's preview site, but the updates led to speculation that further news would soon be forthcoming.[10][11]
Characters
New characters
- Nacht Weiss (ナハト・ヴァイス), a white-haired boy of unclear origins who finds himself working together with Chloe on his path to becoming a bracer. He wields a combination halberd/Orbal gun.[1]
- Chloe Barnett (クロエ・バーネット), an outgoing black-haired girl with a strong sense of justice. A native of the Liberl Kingdom, she attended the Jenis Royal Academy, and is in training to be a bracer against the wishes of her parents.[1]
- Ronaldo Griffin (ロナード・グリフィン), an orange-haired man who works as a detective with the Crossbell State Police Department's First Investigative Division. He seeks to protect his hometown from criminals.[7]
- Jillian Skye (ジリアン・スカイ), a serious purple-haired woman who works as a telephone operator with the Crossbell State Police Department.[7]
- Rieve (リーヴ), a blonde-haired woman who runs the Elfentique Corporation, a startup company.[7]
Returning characters
Several characters first introduced in Trails in the Sky FC are expected to make appearances in Akatsuki no Kiseki. Screenshots released in December 2015 showed Estelle Bright participating in a battle alongside Nacht and Chloe, as well as an interface picture with a label referring to Klose Rinz and dialogue mentioning the Capua Delivery Company.[7] Furthermore, Falcom's Twitter and Facebook posts about Akatsuki in April 2016 included character artwork of Scherazard Harvey, suggesting that she may play a role in the game as well.[10]
Setting and plot
Akatsuki will revisit locations seen in previous Trails games, such as Bose City in the Liberl Kingdom and the Geofront complex under Crossbell, as well as introducing a new country, the Principality of Remiferia.[7]
