Alexander County Schools is the school district serving Alexander County, North Carolina. The largest employer in the county, the system's ten schools serve 5,532 students as of the 2010–11 school year.
Student demographics
For the 2010–11 school year, Alexander County Schools had a total population of 5,532 students and 343.80 teachers on a (FTE) basis. This produced a student-teacher ratio of 16.09:1.[1] That same year, out of the total student population, the gender ratio was 52% male to 48% female. The demographic group makeup was: White, 84%; Black, 4%; Hispanic, 7%; American Indian, 0%; Asian/Pacific Islander, 2%; and two or more races, 3%.[2] For the same school year, 55.65% of the students received free and reduced-cost lunches.[3]
History
As of the third quarter of 2011, the school system is Alexander County's largest employer.[4]
Beginning in 2012, Communities in Schools (CIS) of Wilkes includes the school system in its dropout programs. The school system started developing its own programs and decided to seek help from the CIS of Wilkes as a parent organization for this program. Two people from the school system sit on the Wilkes CIS board.[5]
Governance
The primary governing body of Alexander County Schools follows a council–manager government format with a seven-member Board of Education appointing a Superintendent to run the day-to-day operations of the system. The school system currently resides in the NC State Board of Education's Seventh District.[6]
Board of Education
The seven-member Alexander County Schools Board of Education meets on the second Tuesday of every month. The current members of the board are: Milton H. Campbell (Chair), Caryn L. Brzykcy (Vice-Chair), Joshua D. Lail, Marty Loudermilt, David Odom, Brigette Rhyne, Harry Schrum.[7]
Superintendent
The current superintendent of the system is M. Brock Womble. He was previously superintendent of Mitchell County Schools in Mitchell County, North Carolina.[8]
Member schools
Alexander County Schools has ten schools ranging from pre-kindergarten to twelfth grade. Those ten schools are separated into one high school, two middle schools and seven elementary schools.[9]
