In 1861, Campbell entered the Confederate States Army in the rank of colonel of the 33rd Tennessee Infantry Regiment, serving in the army of General Leonidas Polk in Columbus, Kentucky.[2] In November 1861, General Ulysses Grant led an attack in the Battle of Belmont and, at first was succeeding in capturing the town. However, when Confederate reinforcements arrived, Grant surrendered and retreated.[3] In this battle, Campbell and his regiment was not engaged, only observing from the Kentucky side of the Mississippi River. When the forces were being assembled for the attack of Grant's forces at the battle of Shiloh, Campbell's regiment were a part of the army that marched from Central Kentucky to Corinth, Mississippi.[2]
