Alexander Wade House was the home of educator Alexander Wade (1832-1904), who became known for the system of grade promotional exams and graduations he developed to serve needs of rural students. The system was adopted widely.

The house was declared a U.S. National Historic Landmark in 1965.[2][3] The property was added to the Chancery Hill Historic District in 2001.[4]
