The Alexander mare (died 1819) was an unnamed British Thoroughbred broodmare. She never raced, but at stud she foaled Castrel, Selim, Bronze and Rubens. Both Selim and Rubens became Champion sire in Britain.

Background

The Alexander mare was a bay filly foaled in the 1790s and bred by Mr. Sandiver.^[1] Her sire Alexander was a son of Eclipse who raced at Newmarket for the 1st Earl Grosvenor.^[2] Her dam was a daughter of the undefeated Highflyer. The Alexander mare never raced.

Stud career

Throughout her career as a broodmare the Alexander mare produced a total of sixteen foals. These were:

• Calomel filly – a bay filly foaled in 1799.^[1]
• Piccadilly – a chestnut colt foaled in 1800 and sired by Buzzard.^[1]
• Castrel – a chestnut stallion foaled in 1801 and sired by Buzzard.^[1] He won three races at Newmarket and sired Bustard, Merlin and Pantaloon. His sire line produced Epsom Derby winner Thormanby.^[3]
• Selim – a chestnut stallion foaled in 1802 and sired by Buzzard.^[1] On the racetrack he won six races, including the Craven Stakes and two October Oatlands Stakes. Selim was also a successful sire, with his progeny including Azor, Medora, Sultan and Turquoise and he was Champion sire in 1814.^[4]
• Bronze – a brown mare foaled in 1803 and sired by Buzzard.^[1] She won Epsom Oaks in 1806^[5] and foaled Newmarket Stakes winner Busto.
• Buzzard mare – a brown mare foaled in 1804.^[1] Her dam line produced brothers Uriel and Umbriel, who won the St. James's Palace Stakes and Great Yorkshire Stakes respectively.^[3]
• Rubens – a chestnut stallion foaled in 1805 and sired by Buzzard.^[1] He won the Craven Stakes and was Champion sire three times. He sired Landscape, Pastille and Whizgig.^[6]
• Quiz mare – a brown mare foaled in 1808 and sired by Quiz.^[1] Her dam-line eventually produced Picacero, who was a top racehorse in Argentina.^[7]
• Orville mare – a brown mare foaled in 1809 and sired by Orville.^[1] She was an ancestor of two-time Goodwood Cup winner Count Schomberg.^[8]
• Hocuspocus – a chestnut colt foaled in 1810 and sired by Quiz.^[1] He won a match against a filly by Selim and ran unplaced in St. Leger Stakes in 1813.^[9]
• Sorcerer colt – a black colt foaled in 1811 and sired by Sorcerer. He died young.^[1]
• Sorcerer colt – a colt foaled in 1812.^[1]
• Election mare – a bay mare foaled in 1814 and sired by Election.^[1] She finished second in a 100 guineas Sweepstakes at Newmarket in 1818.^[10] Her dam-line produced 1867 Prix de l'Empereur winner Trocadero.^[11] Through him she is an ancestor of Tracery.
• Hospitality – a bay colt foaled in 1815 and sired by Election.^[1] He won the King's Plates at Ascot Heath and Winchester and the Oxford and Egham Gold Cups in 1819.^[12]
• Regent – a chestnut colt foaled in 1816 and sired by Election.^[1] He was later known as Admiral. He won a Handicap race at Newmarket in 1819.^[12]
• Ambiguity – a chestnut filly foaled in 1818 and sired by either Election or Blucher.^[1]

The Alexander mare died in 1819.^[1]
