Alfred Edward "Alf" Mitchell[1] (born 10 May 1941)[2] is an Australian former track and field athlete who competed in the javelin throw. He was the gold medallist at the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games, defeating the incumbent champion Colin Smith with a games record throw of 78.11 m (256 ft 3 in). He was the second Australian champion in the event, after James Achurch.[3]

Mitchell was a one-time champion at the Australian Athletics Championships, having won in 1962. He was runner-up in 1960, 1961, 1963 and 1964, each time finishing behind Nick Birks – the dominant Australian thrower of the period.[4][5]

He was a former Australian junior record holder.[6] He later took up coaching, training regional thrower Mary Thomas.[7]
