Alphonse Aréola (born 27 February 1993) is a French professional footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for Spanish club Villarreal CF on loan from Paris Saint-Germain.

Club career

Aréola finished his formation with Paris Saint Germain, after playing for INF Clairefontaine and Petits Anges. In July 2009, he signed a professional deal with PSG.

On 18 May 2013, Aréola made his first team debut, replacing Salvatore Sirigu in the 48th minute of a 3–1 home win over Brest. PSG had already won the league title, and their opponents were already relegated.[1] He went on to make a start the following weekend, in a 3–1 away win against Lorient, being substituted after 61 minutes for Ronan Le Crom.[2]

On 23 July 2013 he was loaned to Ligue 2 side RC Lens for the season.[3]

On 26 July 2014, he was once again loaned, this time to fellow Ligue 1 team SC Bastia.[4] On 11 April he played the 2015 Coupe de la Ligue Final against his parent club, losing 0–4.[5]

On 17 June 2015, he joined Spanish club Villarreal on season-long loan.[6]

International career

Aréola played for France at all youth levels. He is also eligible to play for the Philippine senior team due to his parents being both of Filipino heritage and in 2011 was personally invited by team manager Dan Palami to consider playing for the national team.[7]

Aréola was the hero of the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup Final after saving Uruguay's first two penalties — from Emiliano Velázquez and Giorgian De Arrascaeta — in the penalty shootout after the match had remained scoreless at the end of extra time.[8]

On 1 October 2015, Aréola received his first call-up to the senior team for friendlies against Armenia on 8 October and Denmark three days later, as part of the French team's build-up to hosting UEFA Euro 2016.[9]
