Career

Directing career

Marsalis made her directorial debut with the film Echo Park starring Mamie Gummer and Anthony Okungbowa. The film premiered at the 2014 Los Angeles Film Festival. It was acquired for distribution in 2016 by ARRAY.[1] She said that Rebecca Walker, an author with whom she had worked previously, referred her to the producers when they said they were looking for a director. Marsalis, who coincidentally lives in Echo Park, signed on after reading and enjoying the script.[2] Writing for The Hollywood Reporter, Justin Lowe called her directing "undistinguished".[3] Katie Walsh of Indiewire, on the other hand, wrote that the film is "gorgeously photographed", and Marsalis' directing, along with the acting, "elevate the film above what it might have been" because of the script.[4]
