American Home Shield Corporation is the founding American home warranty company and a unit of ServiceMaster. It currently services 1.4 million customers across 49 states and the District of Columbia. American Home Shield was founded in 1971 and operated independently until it was acquired by ServiceMaster (NYSE: SERV) in 1989. Today, it functions as one of ServiceMaster’s “family of brands,” along with Terminix, Furniture Medic, AmeriSpec, ServiceMaster Clean, ServiceMaster Restore, and Merry Maids. It is currently one of a few home warranty companies with active operations in all 48 contiguous states. [1]

American Home Shield is a founding and current member of the National Home Service Contract Association (NHSCA), a non-profit 501(c)(6) industry trade organization of member companies serving home service contract providers and consumer interests throughout the United States.

Organization

American Home Shield is headquartered in Memphis, TN. It also administers additional service centers in Memphis, TN; LaGrange, GA; and Carroll, IA, which customers can call to request appliance or system service. The company handles roughly 2.5 million service requests each year.[3]

American Home Shield works with over 11,000 licensed contractors and 45,000 technicians across the country. The company also monitors contractor performance through a customer satisfaction survey program.[4]

American Home Shield administers home service contracts on major home systems, including air conditioning, heating, electrical, plumbing, water heaters, garbage disposals, instant hot and cold water dispensers, central vacuums, smoke detectors, doorbells, and ceiling fans; as well as appliances, including refrigerators, dishwashers, clothes washers and dryers, ovens, free-standing ice makers, trash compactors, garage door openers, built-in food processors, and built-in microwave ovens.[5]

In 2013, American Home Shield was awarded the 2013 Best in Service Award from HomeWarrantyReviews.com.[6] In 2014, American Home Shield was named the #1 most Recommended Brand Among Women Home Warranty Provider by the Women’s Choice Awards [7]
